Have your habits as a consumer shifted as we move towards becoming more conscious of ethics and sustainability?
During Fashion Revolution Week, Missy Noir and I discussed how our habits have changed over the past year. Here are some musings from my past year from a personal perspective…
Being mindful about purchases. I know myself, whenever I buy something on impulse, I always end up regretting it because I haven't thought through the decision. It’s just the way I am, but I have found it is a good habit to get in to. I think about what I am considering buying - whether I ACTUALLY need it, or I am buying it to try and solve some kind of other unfulfilled emotional need. Thinking about why we want to buy something can put things into perspective, as well as where they are coming from and taking the time to research behind the brand and their practices.
Limiting “new” purchases. A helpful equation I have come up with when considering purchases is that if I have determined that I actually need something, thinking about whether I can first buy this item secondhand - as the old saying goes “one person’s trash is another’s treasure”. If not secondhand, then can I purchase this item handmade by a maker or DIY make it myself? And finally, using new as a last option, instead of it being a first and impulse go to option.
Minimising waste. My nanna had a great saying that I find resonates more and more as I get older “Waste not, want not”. I guess my grandparents grew up in a different time, and our throw-away society can have us wasting more than we would like to admit. Big changes have happened in our home life with regards to food - making big batches and freezing so that food doesn’t get wasted, and using up the poor, forgotten veggies in slow cooked meals. Doing a ‘stocktake’ before shopping for food so that we are more aware of what we are buying and again, actually need.
Enough about me - more about you! What changes have you made in your habits as a consumer? What tips do you have for being more conscious in our personal lifestyles? Let me know in the comments!
